After loosing the knockout final so easily against Sinn Fein a few weeks ago, we wanted to give the oposition a tough match even though we were missing 6 key players (hope they are enjoying the sun back in Ireland). That meant playing our very young coach (Sean McIntyre) in at full forward! There was nothing in the match at half time, with all of the lads putting in a very strong effort. With the start of the second half Sinn Fein scored 3 point to take the lead, but we dug deep and scored 1 - 1 to take the lead by a point. But then Sinn Fein hit back to score a point and level the match. For the next 7 minutes it remained a stalemate due to quite a few wides by both teams, until Sinn Fein scored a quick goal and point to effectively kill the match with only minutes remaining. Yet another lose, but 100% effort produced by everyone on the pitch. Back to Flanagan's to drown our sorrow's. Good luck to Enda Kerrigan, Ian Dargan, Luke Lalor and Aidan Burke who are all heading back home to Ireland after today's match.

Knockout Final. The saying is that that in order to win your first final, you must first loose a final. Well sadly we followed that tradition, but not without putting up a fight, even if it was a very physical one at times. The first half was somewhat difficult at times with the wind, but with Sinn Fein scoring an easy goal things started to get worse. The match costs us dearly half way through the second half, not just on the score board but in an injury to our key back man Joe Hogan, as well as loosing our full forward John Noonan to a second book able offence which became an automatic red card. Unfortunately today was not to be our day, but now that we have lost a final bring on the next one. Good luck to Dave Dorgan after today's match who is heading back home to Ireland.

Victory. We were slow to start with the wind to our backs, and Garryowen punished us accordingly by scoring the first point of the match. But with 13 men against 15 it was inevitable that we would be knocking up the scores pretty fast. A quick shower didn't dampen the lads desire to get on the scoring sheet either. First half scores were registered by Ian Dargan 0 - 3, Luke Lalor 1 - 1, Dave Dorgan 1 - 0, Martin Hickey 1 - 2. For the second match running, our full back Macdara Hegarty got in on the act with 2 points. With the start of the second half the wind had dropped off, which was great as we were playing against it. Some more quick scores followed, and the game was well and truly over. The subs with eager to get in on the action, so the referee was kept busy with all the substitutions happening. Scorers for the second half were Luke Lalor 2 - 0 and John Noonan 1 - 1.

The one that got away. We got off to a flying start in the first half, with a slight wind advantage everyone was keen to get their name on the score board.  Even the full back Macdara Hegarty registered a point. By half time we were leading comfortably with scores from Ian Dargan 0 - 2, Macdara Hegarty 0 - 1, Karol Downes 0 - 1, Enda Kerrigan 1 - 0,  John Noonan 0 - 2,  Luke Lalor 0 - 1, Alan Booth 1 - 0.

With the start of the second half the wind picked up a bit and Sinn Fein were quick to score 1 - 1.  All of a sudden we had a game on our hand.  Sinn Fein slowly edged there way back into the match to take the lead with less than 10 minutes to go.  Scorers for the second half were Martin Hickey 0 - 1, Colm Queally 0 - 1 and Ian Dargan 0 - 2.  Unfortunately our defending let us down a bit today, and our inability to convert scores on the forward line.  Hopefully our next game will prove third time lucky and give us something to celebrate.

Today was the first official hurling match for Melbourne Shamrocks. The opening match was a league match against Garryowen in Gaelic Park in Keysborough. Shamrocks lost the toss to play against the wind in the first half which was quite strong and gave the advantage to the opposition. The first five minutes were quite level but then Garryowen started to dominate the first half with wind advantage. While Shamrocks only managed to score one point for the first half, Garryowen only managed to score 1-7. This was a good result considering that this was the first time Shamrocks had played together as a team.
We opened the second half rather nervously knowing that we had the wind advantage for the second half. Straight away we scored two quick points but then Garryowen dug in and there was a bit of a battle in the midfield. With 15 minutes left we needed a goal - up steped Ray Ryan to score. The match really intensified with points from Colm Queally, Ian Dargan and Martin Hickey. Garryowen responded with two more points.
At this stage it looked like Garryowen had done enough to extend their lead and with the clock ticking there wouldn't be enough time for Shamrocks to stage a comeback. Garryowen led by four points with five minutes to go, but then 3 more points were delivered in succession and we were within a point of Garryowen. At this stage there was only a minute left on the clock and it looked like we were going to run out of time. Was there a goal left in the match? Then Ian Dargan stuck his hand up to grab the ball and belt it into the back of the net with only seconds remaining. Garryowen responded straight away and attacked knowing the only choice was to go for goal and with that sent in a low hard ball which deflected off a defenders hand into the top right hand corner of the net snatching victory in the last seconds of the match with only time left for a puck out. The match drew the biggest crowd of the day with many people talking afterwards about how they haven't seen a hurling match of that quality for a long time at Gaelic Park. While Shamrocks may have failed on the day by a defensive error they had achieved one goal of raising the standard of hurling. Now the second task at hand is for Shamrocks to notch up their first victory of the season.
